Scrolls make it possible to enjoy a piece of art and culture in your own modern home. For centuries, connoisseurs in China and Japan did not believe a painting should be framed and hung permanently on a wall. Instead, they believed that art was meant to be fleeting – something to be appreciated for a time, and then rolled up and stored, or displayed somewhere else. Scrolls were a perfect way to convey this philosophy. The hanging scrolls are rotated according to season or occasion, and such works are never intended to be on permanent display.
